The Fun House: 20th Year Anniversary of House Party

house-party1
20 Years ago, the lifelong dream of a positive Hip Hop duo came true. Written and directed by Reginald Hudlin, House Party was actually based on his Harvard University film school thesis. The movie debuted at the 1990 Sundance Film Festival in January of that year. The lead roles were originally written for DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince who declined. Bring in Hip Hop’s most known unknown group, Kid and Play. What made them so appealing was their decision to be themselves during a time when the “Gangsta Rap” movement grew more popular by the day. With lively personalities that matched their fun inspired music, the 2 became favorites on a set that bolstered what was then and is still now considered to be an all-star cast;  The late Robin Harris who tragically had a heart attack nine days after House Party was released, Martin Lawrence, Tisha Campbell, A.J. Johnson, Daryl “Chill” Mitchell, Gene “Groove” Allen (of Groove B. Chill), Kelly Jo Minter, John Witherspoon, George Clinton and Full Force. From the famous Kid and Play dance and countless hysterical memories to the unforgettable catch phrases such as “follow the drip, follow the drip”, this organically fresh cult film that Hip Hop forgot about definitely deserves its rightful place next to the classics!
